Our desire is that men should believe that fact, not accept our explanations. ‘Christ died for our sins’ is enough without any further elucidation. Moreover, our appeal is never that men should accept a theory about the cross but that they should receive a Person who died for them. To this end we shall continue to preach Christ crucified, because what is folly to the intellectualist and a stumbling-block to the moralist, remains the wisdom and the power of God (1 Cor. 1:23-24).”

- John Stott, “Authentic Christianity”, InterVarsity Press

A joint statement regarding "Deadly Viper"

A joint statement regarding "Deadly Viper":
If you’re not aware, some evangelicals released a book (and a pretty off-color promo video) using Asian cultures (and some misunderstandings thereof) to talk about a subject that didn’t have any direct relationship to any particular Asian culture. It was a pretty painful misappropriation and oversimplification of deep and rich cultures, and a lot of people were upset about it.

Professor Soong-Chan Rah (author of The Next Evangelicalism) has been posting regularly about his frustrations with the issue, and the situation has only degraded… until now. This link (via jopan) is to a conversation between the authors, Rah, and a few other leaders. That this conversation happened is beautiful; how it was handled is beautiful; and, I know I’m a dork, but seeing InterVarsity people so up in the mix makes me proud to be a part of a group so dedicated to reconciliation.

John Piper - Why I abominate the prosperity gospel

I questioned whether abominate was really a verb, but it seems it is. This is a great and well-thought-out (and strongly Biblical) response against the prosperity gospel.

What is "good hair," anyway?

What is "good hair," anyway?:
Heard of Chris Rock’s documentary Good Hair? disobedience centres in the church’s doubts. We are not
sure if our own sins are forgiven. We are not sure if the
gospel is true. And so, because we doubt, we are dumb. We
need to hear again Christ’s word of peace, and see again
his hands and his side. Once we are glad that we have seen
the Lord, and once we have clearly recognized him as our
crucified and risen Saviour, then nothing and no-one will
be able to silence us.”

- John Stott, from ‘The Great Commission’, in “One Race, One Gospel,
One Task”, ed. C. F. Henry and W. S. Mooneyham
(Minneapolis: World Wide Publications, 1967), p. 39.

blog: why I am on staff, pt. 1

blog: why I am on staff, pt. 1:
jopan:

inhabitants of Asia visited Ephesus from..."

“
All the roads of Asia converged on Ephesus, and all the
inhabitants of Asia visited Ephesus from time to time, to
buy or sell, visit a relative, frequent the baths, attend
the games in the stadium, watch a drama in the theatre, or
worship the goddess. And while they were in Ephesus, they
heard of this Christian lecturer named Paul, who was both
speaking and answering questions for five hours in the
middle of every day. Evidently many dropped in, listened
and were converted. They then returned to their towns and
villages as born-again believers. Thus the gospel must
have spread to the Lycus valley and to its chief towns
Colosse, Laodicea and Hierapolis, which Epaphras had
visited but Paul had not, and perhaps to the remaining five
of the seven churches of Revelation 2 and 3, namely Smyrna,
Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis and Philadelphia. This is a
fine strategy for the great university and capital cities
of the world. If the gospel is reasonably, systematically
and thoroughly unfolded in the city centre, visitors will
hear it, embrace it and take it back with them to their
homes.

When we contrast much contemporary evangelism with
Paul’s, its shallowness is immediately shown up. Our
evangelism tends to be too ecclesiastical (inviting people
to church), whereas Paul also took the gospel out into the
secular world; too emotional (appeals for decision without
an adequate basis of understanding), whereas Paul taught,
reasoned and tried to persuade; and too superficial (making
brief encounters and expecting quick results), whereas Paul
stayed in Corinth and Ephesus for five years, faithfully
sowing gospel seed and in due time reaping a harvest.
”

- John Stott, from “The Message of Acts” (The Bible Speaks Today
series: Leicester: IVP, 1990), p. 314.

Kid Shreds on Accordion (via johannes)

Kid Shreds on Accordion (via johannes)

Alachua County Drivers tested on passing school busses next week

Alachua County Drivers tested on passing school busses next week:
Be careful!

Louisiana justice under fire for refusing interracial marriage

Louisiana justice under fire for refusing interracial marriage:
… [shocked face] (via Karima)

A Day at the Office: What Macbooks were truly made for (via...

A Day at the Office: What Macbooks were truly made for (via veronica squires)

AT&T TOMS Shoes Commercial Parody

AT&T TOMS Shoes Commercial Parody

Urbana 09 to Highlight Pressing Missions Issues

Urbana 09 to Highlight Pressing Missions Issues:
Urbana just released the schedule for the main sessions.
